#Linguistics Strang’s Model 1970

Strang’s Model 1970: It was given by Strang in 1970. This model is based on three types of Englishes, ENL, ESL, and EFL used in different territories. This model categorizes countries in which English is spoken in three types.

English as native language (ENL) : Countries who have English as mother language and considered as a native language of majority of people. They don’t need to learn English rather they acquire it by natural process. Countries like USA, UK, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. In these countries you are not supposed to learn a language, but you acquire by natural processes. Here English is considered as official language.

English as second language (ESL): The second category of World Englishes is ESL. Countries having English as their second languages, but they must learn English due to strong influence of English on politics, education, media and all. In this type you are not supposed to acquire language by natural process rather you must learn it consciously for getting better job opportunities in education. Like in our country Pakistan people must learn English due to many factors, better job opportunities, for student getting internal scholarships. It is considered as semi-official language. Most post-colonial countries are come in this category like, India, Pakistan, Nigeria etc.

English as Foreign language (EFL): In this category people have to learn it as a foreign language for international purposes. It has nothing to do with national purposes. Internationally they must learn EFL but inside it does have any utility of    this language. country like Germany, China, and KSA.  It doesn’t emphasize an individual to learn it, but it is personal choice of people learn it for international usefulness.
