Expectancy values theory comes in the field of motivational psychology. John William Atkinson is considered as a founder of this theory. It is based on the model of achievement motivation theory. The aim of these theories is to understand achievement motivation. Expectancy- value theory has been developed in many various fields like education, health, communication, marketing, and economics.

However, all the models differ in its functions and implications according to the fields. In education, it was extended by Jacqulyne Eccles. There are two key factors for learners to perform a task, first is how much it has got the chances of success and the second factor is how much we give value to that task.

According to Dornyie, a good method to motivate the learner is to enhance their level of expectancies by consciously arranging the set-up in which they feel more optimistic and hopeful. There are four major theories including Achievement theory, Attribution theory, self-efficacy theory, and self-worth theory.
